The Jackman-Moose River Region probably has something for just about everyone-except a traffic light. The nearest stop light is 75 miles "down river".

The Rockwood area, on Moosehead Lake, has complete services available for the sportsman and family vacationer. Accommodations are numerous. Motor boats and canoes are available, and the tackle shops will be happy to supply all your fishing needs. You will find most anything you need at the general stores and you may want to visit the gift shops, attend church or dine in the restaurants, offering home-cooked to gourmet meals. Rockwood can be as exciting or laid back as you wish.

In the summer there's fine trout and salmon fishing in dozens of the surrounding lakes and streams-many of which are flies only. A series of marked hiking trails in the mountains leads to lovely views. Canoeing on lakes and the Moose River is very popular. You could even canoe to the Atlantic Ocean from Jackman. Mountain biking on hundreds of miles of lumber roads is rapidly gaining enthusiasts. Whitewater rafting on the Kennebec, Dead and Penobscot Rivers has seen phenomenal growth in recent years. And the area even boasts its own nine-hole Moose River Golf Course.

In the fall the foliage can be nothing short of spectacular, and the days are crisp and clear. Hunting for bear, deer, moose, and partridge is generally excellent, and just being in the woods at this time of year is its own reward.

In the winter, Jackman and Moose River become the hub of the snowmobile Interconnecting Trail System (ITS 86 and 89). Snowmobilers have hundreds of miles of groomed trails connecting the area with Rangeley to the west, Greenville to the east, and the Canadian trail system just 14 miles to the north.

Finally, Skowhegan. Skowhegan is - The cross-roads of Maine - The shire Town of Somerset County - The beginning of the historic Canada Road - The economic heart of central Maine - The jumping off point for Maine's north woods - The Watching Place for Native American salmon fishermen. Skowhegan is all of the above, and much more. It is a cultural center for area artists and craftspeople. It is the middle America that others only dream about being a part of. It is a vibrant, peaceful, energetic, friendly and above all optimistic community.

Looking for adventure in Maine this year?

Deep sea fishing trips, whale watching and lighthouse tours are big in the coastal counties of Hancock (Bar Harbor), and Lincoln, (Booth Bay Harbor).

Moose watching, canoeing and hiking are great in the mountain counties of Piscataquis, (Greenville and Moosehead Lake), and Penobscot, (Bangor).
